Rationality will remain a function of these realities, as will morality. Further nuances of place or context are unnecessary because this will remain so all the time and everywhere: violence is omnipresent and shapes all politics, rationality, and morality in that way. All of this is fundamental. Machiavelli sets out, as was just seen, a series of oft-reprised categories which have now been inscribed in the deeper recesses of the realist imagination and carry with them this feel of unquestionable universality.

From this, everything else in the liberal worldview follows. This worldview has generally been divided into two main series of claims. One follows from Kant and his belief that the moral imperatives that animate human beings can lead them to seek a universal moral order, which will force states to behave in a more peaceful manner toward their counterparts. The other is derived from Adam Smith’s notion that market dynamics can create frameworks of harmonization and order among human beings that act at cross-cutting purposes from those of the state and constrain its ability to wage war.

The liberal literature is in fact in precise opposition to realism, so to say, because it reverses the most fundamental premise of realist thought. Realism assumes that violence precedes the emergence of rationality and society, and that the way in which it is handled and managed then determines the nature of both the rational and the social in human affairs. Liberalism, on the contrary, presupposes the existence of an intrinsic sense of rationality and sociability in humans, which exists aside from violence and therefore can limit its sway in the constitution and evolution of society.
